What is a steel drill bit?
Just as the blade is essential for a saw, the steel drill bit is indispensable for using a drill. Also called a drill bit because all variants are made of steel, this accessory has various possible uses depending on the material to be drilled. It is capable of drilling metal, concrete, wood, glass or tiles. These last two uses are not possible with the steel model, but rather with a diamond or tungsten carbide drill bit. This remarkable ability to drill through different materials is due to its quality as well as its composition.
Steel drill bits have a shank fitting that depends on the chuck and the tail of the bit. There are 3 types: smooth shank, splined shank and hexagonal shank models. The first is suitable for keyless or keyed chucks. The second fits SDS+ or SDS Max chucks. The hexagonal shank is designed specifically to work with electric screwdrivers or impact drivers.
How to choose the right drill bit?
The variety of steel drill bits is such that you must not make a mistake when choosing them. There is a range of criteria that will progressively guide you towards the right model for the type of drilling to be carried out.
Choosing according to your needs
The first step when looking for a professional metal drill bit is to identify the material to be worked on. As listed above, this equipment is capable of drilling through different materials. Therefore, there is a type for each kind of material to be drilled (metals, concrete, wood). There are many other types of models, but these are not made of steel. Thus, if the material to be worked on is metal, you will opt for a smooth shank or hexagonal shank fitting. The same applies to wood. If, on the other hand, the drilling involves concrete, a smooth or splined shank fitting would be appropriate.
Choosing by size
Another important factor is the size of the hole to be made. Whether it needs to be a small or larger diameter, all of this plays a role in choosing the right working equipment. Therefore, the choice of bit should be guided by the thickness of the hole. The larger it is, the thicker the drill bit will be.
The different types of steel drill bits
Steel drill bits come in different types. There are models for drilling metal, concrete and wood. For each material to be drilled, the equipment model has its own specific feature. Let us explore them together.
Metal drill bits
Metal drill bits are made up of a cutting spiral which requires regular sharpening. They are therefore very susceptible to wearing out quickly. To counter early wear, it is recommended to use metal drill bits at low speed.
Choosing metal drill bits
When it comes to choosing a professional metal drill bit, note that it is characterised by a very large flute volume. This detail is essential since among the metals to be drilled there are very often differences in density. This is the case for example with lead and aluminium. It is also important because, given this difference, the materials to be drilled will obviously not have the same resistance and hardness when drilling. Hence the design of metal drill bits with such a large flute volume. It is essential that the bit be harder than the metal to be drilled.
However, a drill bit that can handle a single metal such as aluminium can hardly manage to drill through an alloy of iron and carbon, for example. This barrier of metal density is overcome by diversifying the composition of metal drill bits as well as the materials used in their construction. The result is a clear increase in their hardness and the durability of their cutting edge.
There are therefore two types of metal drill bits:
- high-speed steel drill bits: these are made from an alloyed steel consisting in particular of an associated metallic and chemical element, the result of which gives the drill bit a specific property;
- carbide drill bits or hard metal drill bits: this model is a sintered compound of tungsten carbide and binding metals (generally cobalt or titanium).
The different types of metal drill bits
What sets metal drill bits apart are their categories, their manufacturing processes and/or the chemical elements added.
- High Speed Steel (HSS): known as "acier rapide" in French, this is the basic alloyed steel used. It is strong and has very good hardness.
- Titanium: titanium drill bits are nothing more than an addition to an HSS drill bit. The resulting alloy is harder and more resistant than a simple HSS model.
- Cobalt: the principle is the same here. The cobalt steel drill bit is an alloy obtained after an addition to an alloyed steel such as the HSS drill bit (generally at 5%). Here too, resistance, hardness and toughness are increased. Furthermore, more than titanium, cobalt maintains its properties at a higher temperature.
- Tungsten carbide: this is a very dense alloy of carbon and tungsten. The higher the alloy percentage, the harder the sintered compound becomes.
Regardless of the type of metal drill bit chosen, it must be used with cutting oil. Always maintain constant pressure on the equipment and use it at reduced speed. Metal drill bits must also be regularly sharpened.
Concrete drill bits
These models are used to drill walls, floors, etc. Most of them are made with tungsten carbide and there are versions for soft materials and for hard materials. Tungsten carbide was chosen for concrete drill bits because it is capable of handling concrete, natural stone, calcium silicate bricks and granite. For reinforced concrete and materials of a similar nature with great hardness, it is essential to use a four-flute tip made of solid carbide.
The shank fittings of a concrete drill bit
- Smooth shank fittings: found on drill bits used with keyless or keyed chuck drills;
- SDS: refers to the fact that the shank of the drill bit is splined and a single click is enough to lock it into the chuck. This is a fairly popular type of fitting found on drills and hammer drills from several brands.
The geometry of the flute on concrete drill bits
Although concrete models are also steel drill bits, they are fitted with helical flutes to allow dust to be evacuated more easily. There are four main geometry types: double L-shape, double U-shape, quadruple and turbo geometry.
Wood drill bits and wood auger bits
This type of drill bit has a centred, extremely sharp point to drill through wood without splintering. They resemble metal models in terms of their sharp edges and keen cutting edges.
The different types of wood drill bits
- Three-point bits: this is the most precise and widespread type of wood drill bit. The reason is that in carpentry, this is the bit used for all small-diameter holes. They are called three-point bits because they are equipped with a central point and two lateral points whose role is to scribe a circle.
- Flat bits (spade bits): these are used when the drilling diameter is large, normally from a diameter of 13 mm.
- Spiral bits: these are bits made for chip evacuation during the drilling of large holes, particularly for timber framing.
- Helical bits: these are bits with variants in several diameters and can even exceed 20 mm.
