A plasma cutting torch is a commonly used tool for cutting metals for various purposes. A portable plasma torch is an excellent tool for quickly cutting sheet metal, metal plates, straps, bolts, pipes, etc. Portable plasma torches are also an excellent gouging tool, for back-gouging welded assemblies or removing defective welds. A portable torch can be used to cut small shapes from steel plates. Plasma cutter torches offer many advantages over other metal cutting techniques. First, their robust design and low energy consumption make them very cost-effective tools. In addition, plasma cutter torches offer significantly superior cutting precision and can be used to cut very thin materials without damaging the equipment. Steel, brass, copper and aluminium are some of the materials that can be cut with a plasma torch.
A plasma torch is a device that creates an electric arc between an anode and a cathode and injects air or another gas into it to obtain a plasma. This plasma is an ionised gas similar to a flame. The principle behind the operation of a plasma cutter torch is quite simple. A high-pressure gas is pushed through the torch handle. As the gas escapes from the torch, it is ionised by an electrical impulse and becomes incandescent. This creates a high-temperature arc between the electrode and the nozzle that causes the metal to melt. The arc is maintained inside the torch body by a continuous power supply that is controlled by the plasma cutter's control unit. The power supply is also regulated to keep the arc stable and ensure a precise cut. Once the cut is complete, the gas is shut off and the arc is extinguished.
The main categories of plasma cutter torches include automatic-feed torches, manual torches and combination torches. Each of these torch types has its own characteristics. First, there is the automatic-feed torch, which is generally used for mechanised metal cutting. These types of plasma cutter torches come with a control unit that provides a constant and adjustable current. The automatic-feed torch is also equipped with an integrated cooling system for greater durability and better precision.
As for manual torches, they are designed for manual use and offer greater freedom of movement. They are lightweight and easy to handle. Manual torches can be used for smaller and more complex cuts.
